Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

Qāḍī ʿIyāḍ states in his Life of Mālik (1): Ibn Nāfiʿ and Ashhab—each of them adding something to the other’s wording—narrated that I said, “Abū ʿAbd Allāh, the Almighty says, ‘Faces on that Day will be radiant, gazing at their Lord’ (Qiyāmah 75:22-23). Will they actually look upon Allah?”

He replied, “Yes, with these very eyes of theirs.”

I said, “Yet some people maintain that ‘gazing’ here means ‘expecting’ the reward.”

He answered, “No, they will look at Allah Himself. Have you not heard Moses say, ‘My Lord, let me see that I may look at You’ (Aʿrāf 7:143)? Do you think he asked for the impossible? Allah said, ‘You shall not see Me’—that is, in this world, for it is a realm that perishes. Once they arrive in the Abode of Eternity, they will behold—with what endures—the One who endures.”

The Exalted has also said: “No! Indeed, on that Day they will be veiled from their Lord” (Muṭaffifīn 83:15).

The Qāḍī (2) continued: More than one transmitter reports from Mālik that “Faith is words and deeds; it increases and decreases, and some parts of it are superior to others.”

He further said that Ibn al-Qāsim related: Mālik used to say, “Faith increases,” while he refrained from speaking about its decreasing (3).

He also narrated that Ibn Nāfiʿ reported from Mālik: “Whoever says, ‘The Quran is created,’ is to be flogged and imprisoned.”

In the version of Bishr ibn Bakr from Mālik, he said, “He is to be executed, and no repentance of his is to be accepted” (4).

Yūnus al-Ṣadafī reported: Ashhab narrated to us from Mālik that “The Qadariyyah—no…"
