when a man said, ‘Abū ʿAbd Allāh, “The All-Merciful rose over the Throne”—how did He rise?’
Mālik lowered his gaze, perspiration broke out upon him, then he raised his head and said, ‘“The All-Merciful rose over the Throne” exactly as He has described Himself. One must not ask of Him, “How?” for the very question “how” is ruled out concerning Him. You are a wicked man, an innovator—remove him.’
Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr Qashmard al-Naysābūrī said: I heard Yaḥyā ibn Yaḥyā say, ‘We were sitting with Mālik when a man came and said, “The All-Merciful rose over the Throne…,”’ and he reported something to that effect, adding that Mālik said, ‘The rising is not unknown.’
ʿAbd Allāh ibn Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal narrated in his book Refutation of the Jahmiyyah (1): My father related to me; Surayj ibn al-Nuʿmān related to us, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Nāfiʿ, who said: ‘Mālik said: “Allah is in the heaven, and His knowledge is in every place; nothing is devoid of it.”’
And Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq al-Ṣaghānī said: Abū Bakr Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad al-ʿUmarī related to us; Ibn Abī Uways related to us; I heard Mālik say, ‘The Quran is the speech of Allah, and the speech of Allah proceeds from Him; nothing that comes from Allah is created.’ (2)
