terror into their hearts, so they began to pull down the very houses in which they were sheltering, starting from the rear. They could not venture out against the Prophet ﷺ, while his Companions went on demolishing them bit by bit.
When the Jews were almost at the last of their dwellings, still waiting for the hypocrites—who never delivered what they had promised—and once they despaired of any help from them, they asked the Prophet ﷺ for the same terms he had previously offered. He therefore settled with them on the condition that they leave the land; they could take with them whatever their camels could carry, except weapons. Thus they scattered like birds, each heading in a different direction.
The clan of Abū al-Ḥuqayq made for Khaybar, carrying with them many silver vessels, which the Prophet ﷺ later saw. As for Ḥuyayy ibn Akhṭab, he went to Mecca and incited Quraysh against the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
Allah then disclosed to His Messenger the secrets of the hypocrites and their collusion with the Jews. These hypocrites had taunted the Muslims when they cut down and burned the palm-trees, saying, “What crime did the trees commit while you claim to be people of reform?” Thereupon Allah revealed, “Whatever palm-trees you cut down or left standing upon their roots, it was by Allah’s permission” (surah al-Hashr, 59:5). He declared the spoils to be for His Messenger as a special allocation, and the Prophet divided them among those Emigrants whom Allah directed him to favor. The expulsion of Banū al-Naḍīr took place in Muḥarram of the third year AH.
Banū Qurayẓah remained in Medina in their homes; the Prophet ﷺ was not commanded to kill or expel them until Allah disgraced them through Ḥuyayy ibn Akhṭab and the forces of the Confederates.
These are the exact words transmitted by Mūsā ibn ʿUqbah; ʿUrwah’s account conveys the same meaning up to the mention of Saʿd receiving the sword.
Mūsā ibn ʿUqbah and others also report, through Nāfiʿ from ʿAbd Allah, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ
