—an ijāza (authorisation). Through a fully connected, elevated chain I have received forty hadiths taken from al-Miʾah al-Shurayhiyyah, Juzʾ Bībāʾ (1), Juzʾ al-Banyāsī (2), and the Muḥāmiliyyah fascicles (3). Among them is the following:
Abū al-Maʿālī Aḥmad ibn Isḥāq al-Hamadhānī informed us, saying:
Abū al-Maḥāsin Muḥammad ibn Hibat-Allah ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz al-Dīnawarī informed us in Baghdad in the year 620 AH; my uncle Abū Bakr Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz had informed us in 539 AH; ʿĀṣim ibn al-Ḥasan informed us; ʿAbd al-Wāḥid ibn Muḥammad al-Fārisī informed us; al-Ḥusayn ibn Ismāʿīl the judge related to us; Aḥmad ibn Ismāʿīl al-Madani related to us; Mālik related to us, from ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Anṣārī, from Abū Yūnus, the freedman of ʿĀʾishah, from ʿĀʾishah:
A man said to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) while he was standing at the door and I could hear him: “O Messenger of Allah, I awaken in a state of major ritual impurity while I intend…"
= Al-Zuhri al-Awfi, the judge of Medina and one of its leading shaykhs, was a devoted companion of Malik, studied jurisprudence under him, and transmitted Malik’s Muwatta. It is said that his recension was the last of all the Muwattas. He died in 242 AH. His version has never been printed; al-Baghawi cites it frequently in Sharh al-Sunna. The printed Muwatta versions are those of Yahya ibn Yahya al-Masmudi and of Muhammad ibn al-Hasan, the disciple of Imam Abu Hanifa.
(1) She is Bibi bint Abd al-Rahman ibn Ali, also called Umm al-Fadl and Umm Arabi al-Harithiyya al-Harawiyya. A single fascicle is attributed to her, which she reports from Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Shurayh. She died in 477 AH (or the following year) after completing ninety years of age (al-Ibar, 3/287).
(2) He is Abu Abd Allah Malik ibn Ahmad ibn Ali ibn al-Farra al-Baniyasi al-Baghdadi (d. 485 AH). The present report contains two dictation sessions: the first from Abu al-Husayn Ali ibn Muhammad ibn Abd Allah ibn Bishran, the second from Abu al-Fath Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Abi al-Fawaris (al-Ibar, 3/208–209).
(3) These are nine-part Amali (dictations) by Qadi Abu Abd Allah al-Husayn ibn Ismail al-Dhabi al-Baghdadi al-Mahamili. He heard hadith from Abu Hisham al-Rifa‘i, Ya‘qub al-Dawraqi, al-Hasan ibn al-Salih al-Bazzar, Muhammad ibn al-Muthanna, Muhammad ibn Ismail al-Bukhari, and many others. His students included Da‘laj ibn Ahmad, al-Tabarani, al-Daraqutni and others. Abu Bakr al-Dawudi relates that ten thousand people attended his dictation sessions. He died in 330 AH (Tadhkirat al-Huffaz, p. 824).
