Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

O ravine of Radwā, what has happened to the one who dwells in you that he is nowhere to be seen, while between us and him there is a bond of yearning stronger than any tie? (1)

How long—till when, and for what span?* O son of the Trustee, and you are alive, receiving your provision!

It was said that he met with Jaʿfar al-Ṣādiq, who exposed to him the error of his belief, whereupon he repented.

Ibn Jarīr stated in al-Milal wa-l-Niḥal that al-Sayyid held the doctrine of the transmigration of souls.

Some said he died in the year 173 AH; others said, in 178 AH.

His verse is of the highest caliber, and for that reason Abū al-Ḥasan al-Dāraqutnī memorized his entire dīwān.

(1) A shaʿb (the open space between two mountains). – Radwa: a high mountain cut by numerous passes and valleys, one day’s march from Yanbuʿ and seven stages from Madina. The Kaysanite sect claimed that Muhammad b. al-Hanafiyya is alive there, guarded by a lion and a panther, beside two gushing springs flowing with water and honey, and that he will return from his occultation to fill the earth with justice after it had been filled with oppression. – al-awlaq: a light-headed frenzy akin to madness. The two verses are quoted in: Ibn ʿAsakir, Tarikh, 5/365; al-Dhahabi, Tarikh al-Islam, 3/295; al-Masʿudi, Muruj al-Dhahab, 2/201. The second verse alone appears in Ibn al-Muʿtazz, Tabaqat al-Shuʿaraʾ, p. 33.
