5 – Saʿīd ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Abī Yaḥyā al-Tanūkhī (M, 4)
He was an imam, a model scholar, and the mufti of Damascus—Abū Muḥammad al-Tanūkhī, the Damascene.
Some also called him Abū ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz.
He was born in the year 90 AH, while Sahl ibn Saʿd and Anas ibn Mālik were still alive (may Allah be pleased with them).
He learned the Qur’an from Ibn ʿĀmir and Yazīd ibn Abī Mālik.
Among those who recited to him were al-Walīd ibn Muslim and Abū Mushir.
He transmitted hadith from Makḥūl, al-Zuhrī, Nāfiʿ the freedman of Ibn ʿUmar, Rabīʿah ibn Yazīd al-Qaṣīr, Ismāʿīl ibn ʿUbayd Allah, Yūnus ibn Maysarah ibn Ḥalbas, ʿUmayr ibn Hāniʾ, Abū al-Zubayr al-Makkī, Zayd ibn Aslam, Bilāl ibn Saʿd, and several others.
He once visited ʿAṭāʾ ibn Abī Rabāḥ, asked him about a legal matter, and he himself was not a prolific transmitter of hadith.
He also narrates from ʿAṭiyyah ibn Qays, Sulaymān ibn Mūsā, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Salamah al-Jumaḥī, Yaḥyā al-Dhīmārī, ʿUthmān ibn Abī Sawdah al-Maqdisī, Maʿbad ibn Hilāl, ʿAbd al-Karīm ibn Abī al-Makhāriq, and Muʿādh ibn Sahl al-Juhanī.
Al-Ṭabarānī compiled Saʿīd’s narrations into a single volume.
