Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

ʿAbd al-Ḥāfiẓ ibn Badrān and Yūsuf ibn Aḥmad narrated to us, saying:
Mūsā ibn ʿAbd al-Qādir informed us, Saʿīd ibn Aḥmad informed us, ʿAlī ibn Aḥmad al-Bundār informed us, Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Mukhalliṣ reported to us, ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad related to us, Muḥammad ibn Kathīr ibn Marwān al-Fihrī narrated to us, ʿAbd Allāh ibn Luhayʿah told me, from Abū Qabīl, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr, who said:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Whoever sneezes or belches and then says, al-ḥamdu li-llāh ʿalā kulli ḥālin mina al-ḥāl (Praise be to Allah in every circumstance), seventy diseases are repelled from him, the lightest of which is leprosy.”
This is an objectionable report; Ibn Luhayʿah is not strong enough to bear it, and it is transmitted only by al-Fihrī—and he is a shaykh of very weak standing (1).

Abū al-Maʿālī Aḥmad ibn Isḥāq narrated to us, al-Fatḥ ibn ʿAbd al-Salām narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn ʿUmar the judge, Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad al-Ṭarāʾifī, and Abū Ghālib Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī narrated to us, saying:
Abū Jaʿfar ibn al-Muslimah informed us, Abū al-Faḍl ʿUbayd Allāh ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Zuhrī informed us, Jaʿfar ibn Muḥammad al-Firyābī informed us, Qutaybah ibn Saʿīd narrated to us, Ibn Luhayʿah narrated to us, from Mishraḥ ibn Hāʿān, from ʿUqbah ibn ʿĀmir, who said:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “The greatest number of hypocrites in my community are its reciters (2).” This.

(1) In his work Mizan, the author cites Ibn Maʿin’s judgment, “he is not reliable,” and Ibn ʿAdi’s comment, “he transmits fabrications.” The report is found in Tarikh Baghdad 8/28 on the authority of Ibn ʿAmr as a marfuʿ hadith; al-Khilaʿi includes it in his Fawaʾid from ʿAli; Ibn Abi Shayba records it in the Musannaf with his chain going back to ʿAli; al-Khatib relates it from Abu Ayyub; Ibn ʿAsakir from Ibn ʿAbbas; and al-Tabarani in al-Awsat from ʿAli, all with similar wording. Every one of these chains is weak; see al-Fawaʾid al-Majmuʿa fi al-Ahadith al-Mawduʿa, pp. 222–223. (2) Ahmad 4/151, 154, 155; al-Firyabi, Sifat al-Nifaq, p. 54; Ibn ʿAdi, al-Kamil, 1/211; and al-Khatib, Tarikh Baghdad, 1/357 transmit the hadith through several routes from Ibn Lahiʿa, from Musharrah b. Haaʿan, from ʿUqbah b. ʿAmir; the three ʿAbd-Allahs narrate from him. Ibn Lahiʿa is corroborated by al-Walid b. al-Mughira, as the author notes; this version appears in al-Firyabi, p. 53, and al-Walid is trustworthy, so the chain is sound. A parallel report from ʿAbd-Allah b. ʿUmar is recorded by Ibn al-Mubarak in al-Zuhd (no. 451), Ahmad 2/175, al-Firyabi, pp. 53–54, and al-Bukhari in al-Tarikh al-Kabir 1/257. Although Muhammad b. Hadiya is not accredited, the remaining narrators are reliable; consequently, this second chain supports ʿUqbah’s hadith and raises it to the level of authenticity.
