and he fell from his donkey; whereupon Ibn ʿAtīq hurried over, sat him upright, and we escorted him to his house.
ʿAmr ibn Khālid al-Harrānī said: I heard Zuhayr say to Miskīn ibn Bukayr the cobbler,
“O Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, what did Ibn Luhayʿah write to you?”
He replied, “He did not write to me but to someone else, stating that ʿUqayl had informed him, from Ibn Shihāb, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered fasting on the last Monday of Shaʿbān.” (1)
Al-ʿUqaylī said: ʿAbd Allah ibn Aḥmad narrated to us; my father narrated to me; Khālid ibn Khidāsh narrated to us. He said: Ibn Wahb said to me—when he saw that I was not writing down the ḥadith of Ibn Luhayʿah—“I am not like others regarding Ibn Luhayʿah; so write them down.” (2)
Saʿīd ibn Abī Maryam said: Ibn Luhayʿah did not hear anything from Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd; rather, Yaḥyā wrote this ḥadith to him—the report of al-Sāʾib ibn Yazīd, the nephew of Namir—saying,
“I kept company with Saʿd for such-and-such years and never heard him relate anything from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ except one ḥadith, and I was right behind him all the while: ‘Do not separate what is together, nor combine what is separate when collecting zakāh.’” (3)
Ibn Luhayʿah therefore assumed it was a ḥadith from Saʿd, whereas it was merely the opening sentence of a set of legal questions that Yaḥyā had written to him.
ʿAffān reported: Ḥammād ibn Zayd narrated to us, from Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd, from al-Sāʾib ibn Yazīd, that he accompanied Saʿd from Medina to Mecca and did not hear him transmit anything from the Prophet ﷺ until they returned.
