Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

Yaḥyā al-Qaṭṭān said: Bishr ibn al-Sarī told me, “Had you seen Ibn Luhayʿah, you would not have taken from him so much as a single letter.” (1)

Nuʿaym ibn Ḥammād said: I heard Yaḥyā ibn Ḥassān relate, “A group of people once came with a fascicle and said, ‘We heard this from Ibn Luhayʿah.’ I examined it and discovered that it did not contain a single ḥadith of Ibn Luhayʿah. I went up to him and asked, ‘What is this?’ He replied, ‘What am I supposed to do with them? They arrive with a book and say, “These are your narrations,” so I relate it to them.’” (2)

Ibn Ḥibbān said: Abu Yaʿlā narrated to us; Kāmil ibn Ṭalḥah narrated to us; Ibn Luhayʿah narrated to us; Huyayy ibn ʿAbd Allah narrated to me, from Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Hubulī, from ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAmr, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, during his final illness, said, “Call for me my brother.” They summoned Abū Bakr, but he turned away from him. He then said, “Call for me my brother,” so they summoned ʿUthmān, and he likewise turned away. Then ʿAlī was called; the Prophet covered him with his cloak and leaned over him, and when ʿAlī came out they asked, “What did he say to you?” He replied, “He taught me a thousand chapters, each chapter opening up a thousand more chapters.” (3)

This is a disclaimed (munkar) ḥadith; it is, in all likelihood, fabricated.

ʿUthmān ibn Ṣāliḥ said: “I know of no one who has reported the cause of Ibn Luhayʿah’s infirmity better than I have. After we had finished the Friday prayer, I and ʿUthmān ibn ʿAtīq set off and met Ibn Luhayʿah ahead of us, riding (4) a donkey on his way home. He was struck with paralysis and fell from his mount, …”
