he served as a judge there, and in my estimation he is trustworthy.
Among the unusual reports transmitted from him is the following. Saʿīd ibn Abī Maryam said: “Yaḥyā ibn Ayyūb related to us; Ibn Jurayj related to me, from Abū al-Zubayr, from Jābir who said:
‘The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Do not pursue knowledge in order to boast before the scholars, nor to debate with the ignorant, nor to seek prominence in gatherings. Whoever does so—the Fire, the Fire!” (1)’”
He (al-ʿUqaylī) said: “This report is known only through Yaḥyā ibn Ayyūb.”
Saʿīd ibn ʿUfayr and Abū Saʿīd ibn Yūnus stated that he died in the year 168 AH.
The authors of the six canonical collections relied on him in their books, although al-Bukhārī cited only two of his ḥadiths, each coupled with another narrator.
Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad the ḥāfiẓ informed us; Yaʿīsh ibn ʿAlī informed us (ḥ (2)).
Sunqur al-Zaynī also informed us; ʿAlī ibn Abī al-Fatḥ al-Kunārī, at Aleppo in the year 25, informed us. They both said:
“ʿAbd Allāh ibn Aḥmad al-Khaṭīb informed us; Manṣūr ibn Bakr ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī ibn Ḥayd informed us; Abū Bakr Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī ibn Ḥayd, in the year 419, informed us; Abū al-ʿAbbās Muḥammad ibn Yaʿqūb al-Aṣamm narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbd al-Ḥakam informed us; Isḥāq ibn al-Furāt informed us, from Yaḥyā ibn Ayyūb, who said:
‘Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd told me: Nāfiʿ informed me that ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar used to—’”} } } } } } } } }
