Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

and Khālid ibn Dhakwān, Shuʿayb ibn al-Ḥabḥāb, ʿĀṣim ibn al-ʿAjjāj al-Jaḥdharī, Ayyūb al-Sakhtiyānī, Yūnus ibn ʿUbayd, ʿAmr ibn Dīnār, Abū al-Zubayr al-Makkī, Muḥammad ibn Wāsiʿ, Maṭar ibn Ṭahmān the paper-seller, Yazīd al-Raqāshī, Abū al-Tayyāḥ al-Ḍubaʿī—Yazīd—ʿAṭāʾ ibn ʿAjlān, ʿAṭāʾ ibn al-Sāʾib, and many others besides them.

Those who transmitted from him included: Ibn Jurayj, Ibn al-Mubārak, Yaḥyā al-Qaṭṭān, Ḥaramiyy ibn ʿUmāra, Ibn Mahdī, Abū Nuʿaym, ʿAffān, al-Qaʿnabī, Mūsā ibn Ismāʿīl, Shaybān ibn Farrūkh, Hudba ibn Khālid, ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muʿāwiya al-Jumaḥī, ʿAbd al-Wāḥid ibn Ghiyāth, ʿAbd al-Aʿlā ibn Ḥammād al-Narsī, Ibrāhīm ibn al-Ḥajjāj al-Sāmī, ʿUbayd Allāh ibn ʿĀʾisha al-Taymī, Abū Kāmil Muẓaffar ibn Mudrik the ḥāfiẓ, al-Ḥasan al-Ashyab, Yaḥyā ibn Isḥāq al-Saylaḥīnī, al-Aswad ibn ʿĀmir, al-Haytham ibn Jamīl, Asad al-Sunna, Saʿīd ibn Sulaymān, and a great many others.

The last person who claimed to have heard from him was Aḥmad ibn Abī Sulaymān al-Qawārīrī—an abandoned and suspect narrator—whom Muḥammad ibn Makhlad al-ʿAṭṭār met in the year 270 AH.

He transmitted the variant Qur’anic letters from ʿĀṣim and Ibn Kathīr; Ḥaramiyy ibn ʿUmāra and Abū Salama al-Tabūdhakī learned those letters from him.

Shuʿba said, “Ḥammād ibn Salama used to furnish me with reports from ʿAmmār ibn Abī ʿAmmār.”

Wuhayb ibn Khālid declared, “Ḥammād ibn Salama is our master and the most knowledgeable among us.”

Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal said, “He knows the hadith of ʿAlī ibn Zayd ibn Judʿān better than anyone else.”

ʿAlī ibn al-Madīnī remarked, “Yaḥyā ibn Ḍurays al-Rāzī had in his possession ten thousand hadiths from Ḥammād ibn Salama.”

The author adds: “By this he means the disconnected reports and other transmitted traditions.”
