Yūnus ibn Bukayr, reporting from Ibn Isḥāq, said: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Najīḥ related to me, from Mujāhid, from ʿAlī (may Allah be pleased with him), who said:
“I asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for Fāṭimah’s hand. A maidservant of mine said to me, ‘Have you heard that Fāṭimah has been proposed to before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?’ I replied, ‘No.’ She said, ‘Then what is keeping you from going to him so that he may marry her to you?’ I said, ‘But I have nothing with which to marry her.’ She answered, ‘If you go to him, he will wed her to you.’
By Allah, she kept urging me until I entered upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He possessed an awe-inspiring majesty, so I became tongue-tied; by Allah, I could not utter a word. He said, ‘What is your need? Have you come for something?’ I remained silent. Then he said, ‘Perhaps you have come to propose for Fāṭimah?’ I said, ‘Yes.’ He asked, ‘Do you have anything to offer as a bridal gift whereby she becomes lawful to you?’ I replied, ‘No, by Allah.’ He said, ‘What happened to the coat of mail I armed you with?’ By the One in whose hand is the soul of ʿAlī, it was only a ḥuṭamiyya coat of mail worth no more than four dirhams. I said, ‘I still have it.’ He said, ‘I have married her to you, so send it to me.’ Thus that coat of mail became Fāṭimah’s dower (may Allah be pleased with her).
Ayyūb, from ʿIkrimah, from Ibn ʿAbbās, said: When ʿAlī married Fāṭimah (may Allah be pleased with her) the Prophet ﷺ said to him, ‘Give her something.’ He replied, ‘I have nothing.’ The Prophet said, ‘Where is your ḥuṭamiyya coat of mail?’ This was recorded by Abū Dāwūd.
ʿAṭāʾ ibn al-Sāʾib narrated from his father, from ʿAlī (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ furnished Fāṭimah with a velvet cloak, a waterskin, and a leather cushion stuffed with idhkhir (a fragrant grass).
