Abu Ishaq al-Sabiʿi, Abu al-Zinad, ʿAtaʾ ibn al-Saʾib, and many others.
He even went so far as to narrate from Shuʿbah.
Those who transmitted from him include Shuʿbah—who was older than he, and whose narration from him is found in Sahih Muslim—together with Ibn al-Mubarak, Yahya ibn Abi Zaʾidah, Ibn Numayr, Yazid, Wakiʿ, Abu Dawud, Yahya ibn Adam, Abu al-Nadr, Muhammad ibn Yusuf al-Firyabi, Qubaysah, Abu Nuʿaym, Shababah, al-Muqriʾ, Muhammad ibn Sabiq, ʿAli ibn Qadim, ʿAli ibn al-Jaʿd, and a host of others.
Abu Dawud said: Shuʿbah once told me, “Keep to Warqaʾ, for after him you will not meet anyone like him until you return!” Someone asked Abu Dawud, “What did he mean by that?” He replied, “He meant that Warqaʾ is better, more scrupulous, and superior to him. (1)”
Abu Dawud also related from Ahmad, who said, “Warqaʾ is trustworthy, a man of the Sunnah.”
He was asked, “Was he an Murjiʾi? (2)” He answered, “I do not know.”
Hanbal reported: I heard Abu ʿAbd Allah say, “Warqaʾ was from Khurasan, and he makes transcription errors in more than one place.” Abu ʿAbd Allah judged him weak in tafsir.
Harb al-Karmani related from Ahmad that he declared him reliable in the tafsir of Ibn Abi Najih, adding, “He is more reliable than Shibl.”
He went on to say, “Nevertheless, they maintain that Warqaʾ did not hear the entire tafsir from Ibn Abi Najih; they say part of it was by presentation.”
Yahya al-Qattan said that Muʿadh reported from Warqaʾ, who said, “As for the book of tafsir, I read half of it to Ibn Abi Najih, and he read the other half to me.”
Ibn Abi Najih (3) said, “This is the tafsir of Mujahid. (4)”
