Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

Al-Ḥāfiẓ Ibn ʿAdī said, “I have seen upright reports of his on the authority of those from whom he narrates, and I hope there is no objection to him.”

Ibn Saʿd—thereby differing from the majority—remarked, “He was weak in ḥadith.”

Abū Jaʿfar al-Nufaylī and others said: “He died in the year 168 AH.”

Abū al-Faḍl Ibn ʿAsākir informed us: al-Qāsim ibn ʿAbd Allāh related to us; Abū al-Asʿad Hibat al-Raḥmān related to us; ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd al-Baḥīrī related to us. Ibn ʿAsākir also related to us, from ʿAbd al-Raḥīm ibn al-Samʿānī, who said: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad related to us; Muḥammad ibn ʿUbayd Allāh al-Ṣarrām related to us; both of them said:

Abū Nuʿaym narrated to us; then Abū ʿAwanah; then Muḥammad ibn Kathīr al-Ḥarrānī; then ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muʿayd al-Ḥarrānī; then al-Naḍr ibn ʿArabī, from ʿIkrimah, from Ibn ʿAbbās, who said:

“When the Prophet ﷺ was placed in his grave-niche, a quilt that belonged to him was laid between him and the side of the niche. It was a white quilt from Baalbek.” (1)

The report is graded good (ḥasan) and singular (gharīb). (2)

As for Ibn Muʿayd, he is regarded as truthful; his name is pronounced with a ḍamma, on the same morphological pattern as ʿUbayd. That, at least, is how I have found it.

(1) The report is cited by Ibn Asakir in his History of Damascus (MS version) with the chain: Abu al-Qasim Ismail b. Ahmad b. Umar → Abu al-Qasim b. Masada → Hamza b. Yusuf → Abu Ahmad b. Adi → Ahmad b. Harun al-Bardiji → Muhammad b. Yahya b. Kathir → Abd Allah b. Muʿayt al-Harrani → al-Nadr b. ʿArabi → ʿIkrima → Ibn Abbas, who said: “A white Baalbakian blanket was placed in the grave of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.” (2) Muslim records the same report in his Sahih, no. 967 (Funerals, chapter: Placing a blanket in the grave), and al-Nasaʾi, 4/81 (Funerals, chapter: Laying a cloth in the lahd), through the isnad Shʿuba → Abu Jamra → Ibn Abbas, who relates that a red blanket was placed in the Prophet’s grave. Al-Zarqani, Sharh al-Mawahib, 5/330, notes that the blanket was put there by his freedman Shuqran, who swore that no one would wear it after the Prophet. Wakiʿ and the majority of scholars therefore regard such placement of a blanket, cushion, or similar item in a grave as disliked (makruh), while only al-Baghawi allowed it; the correct view is that it is disapproved. The majority answer that Shuqran acted on his own, without the knowledge or approval of the other Companions, merely to prevent anyone from wearing the blanket afterwards, as stated by al-Nawawi. Ibn Abd al-Barr adds that the blanket was removed once the nine bricks were laid over the grave; this view is preferred by Ibn Hajar and his teacher, al-Iraqi.
