He replied, "Just now Gabriel came to me with some water, gave me to drink, and said, ‘You, your brother, and your mother are among those upon whom Allah has bestowed His favor.’" With that, his soul departed.
I said: Ḥasan held the view that one should rise up against the governors of his day because of their tyranny and injustice, yet he never himself took up arms. He also maintained that the Friday congregational prayer should not be performed behind a flagrant sinner.
ʿAbd Allah ibn Dāwūd al-Khuraybī said: Ḥasan ibn Ṣāliḥ abandoned the Friday prayer, whereupon a certain man came and debated with him from night until dawn. Consequently, Ḥasan adopted the position of leaving the Friday prayer along with them and of rebelling against them. This is widely reported of Ḥasan ibn Ṣāliḥ, and Allah protected him from being seized and killed on account of his religion and devotion.
Al-Bukhārī said—quoting Abū Nuʿaym:
Ḥasan ibn Ṣāliḥ died in the year 169 AH.
I say: He lived for sixty-nine years, and he and his brother ʿAlī were twins.
