“Keep the company of Mālik ibn Mighwal and Zāʾidah.”
I replied, “If that is what you say, I shall never sit with you again.”

Muḥammad ibn Ismāʿīl al-Aṣbahānī narrates from ʿAlī ibn al-Jaʿd, who said:
“I was with Zāʾidah on the road to Mecca when, one day, he asked us, ‘Which of you has memorised the report from Mughirah, from Ibrāhīm, that he performed ablution from a water jug (kūz al-ḥubb) twice?’
“He went on, ‘Had I said, “Sharīk or Sufyān related it to us,” I would have been at ease; instead I said, “Ḥasan ibn Ṣāliḥ related it to us from Mughirah.”’
“Ḥasan ibn Ṣāliḥ thereupon said as well, ‘I shall never relate a hadith to you again.’”

Abū Usāmah said, “I heard Zāʾidah say, ‘Ibn Ḥayy has long been ready for crucifixion, yet we cannot find anyone to crucify him.’”

Khalaf ibn Tamīm said, “Zāʾidah used to demand repentance from anyone who went to Ḥasan ibn Ṣāliḥ.” (1)

Aḥmad ibn Yūnus al-Yarbūʿī remarked, “It would have been better for Ḥasan ibn Ṣāliḥ never to have been born—he abandons the Friday Prayer and preaches the sword. I kept his company for twenty years and never once saw him raise his head toward the sky or speak about worldly matters.”

Muḥammad ibn al-Muthannā said, “I never heard Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd nor ʿAbd al-Raḥmān relate anything at all from Ḥasan ibn Ṣāliḥ, nor from ʿAlī ibn Ṣāliḥ.”

Al-Fallās said, “I asked ʿAbd al-Raḥmān about a hadith of Ḥasan ibn Ṣāliḥ, but he refused to relate it to me. He had once narrated three hadiths from him, then he abandoned him.” (2)

He added, “Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd was asked about him and said, ‘He was of no account.’”

ʿAlī ibn Ḥarb al-Ṭāʾī reported from his father, who said:
“I said to ʿAbd Allāh ibn Dāwūd al-Khuraybī, ‘You transmit a great many hadiths from Ibn Ḥayy, do you not?’
“He replied, ‘The obligation owed to his companions led me to that …’”
