Zakariyya al-Sāji related from Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad al-Baghdādī who said: Our shaykh al-Mizzī—I think he meant Abū Bakr al-Athram—told us: “I heard Abū Nuʿaym say:
‘On a Friday al-Thawrī entered the mosque through the qiblah gate and found al-Ḥasan ibn Ṣāliḥ standing in prayer. He remarked, “We seek Allah’s refuge from the hypocrite’s show of humility,” then picked up his sandals and moved to another pillar.’
Al-ʿAlāʾ ibn ʿAmr al-Ḥanafī reported from Zāfir ibn Sulaymān:
‘I intended to perform ḥajj, so al-Ḥasan ibn Ṣāliḥ said to me, “If you meet Abū ʿAbd Allāh Sufyān al-Thawrī in Mecca, convey my greetings and say, ‘I am still upon the original position.’” When I met Sufyān during ṭawāf I said, “Your brother al-Ḥasan ibn Ṣāliḥ sends you greetings and says, ‘I am still upon the original position.’” He replied, “Then what about the Friday Prayer?” I answered, “He abandons the Friday Prayer, holding it invalid behind rulers he deems unjust.”’
ʿUbayd ibn Yaʿyish narrated from Khallād ibn Yazīd:
‘Sufyān came to me and said, “Al-Ḥasan ibn Ṣāliḥ, despite all the knowledge he has heard and the understanding he possesses, neglects the Friday Prayer,” and then he rose and left.’
Abū Saʿīd al-Ashajj said: I heard Ibn Idrīs say, “What is there between me and Ibn Ḥayy? He recognizes neither the Friday Prayer nor jihād.”
Muḥammad ibn Ghaylān reported from Abū Nuʿaym:
‘When al-Ḥasan ibn Ṣāliḥ was mentioned in Sufyān al-Thawrī’s presence, he remarked, “That man believes in raising the sword against the community of Muḥammad ﷺ.”’
Yūsuf ibn Asbāṭ said: “Al-Ḥasan ibn Ḥayy advocated the sword.”
Al-Khuraibī said: “I witnessed Ḥasan ibn Ṣāliḥ and his brother together with Sharīk; they spent the whole night with him discussing the question of taking up the sword.”
