I say: he was pointing to the weakness of Ibn Muhājir and al-Qattāt.
Among the rarer narrations preserved by Isrāʾīl is what Aḥmad relates in his Musnad: “Abū Saʿīd narrated to us; Isrāʾīl narrated to us; Saʿīd ibn Masrūq narrated to us, from Saʿd ibn ʿUbaydah, from Ibn ʿUmar, from ʿUmar, who said, ‘No—by my father!’ The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) thereupon said, ‘Stop! Whoever swears by anything other than Allah has committed shirk.’ (1) All of its narrators are reliable.
Among his elevated chains is the following: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Qudāmah the jurist informed us; ʿUmar ibn Muḥammad informed us; Hibat Allāh ibn Muḥammad informed us; Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad ibn Ghaylān narrated to us; Abū Bakr al-Shāfiʿī narrated to us; Ibrāhīm ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥīm ibn Danūqā narrated to us; ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ṣāliḥ al-ʿIjlī narrated to us; Isrāʾīl narrated to us, from Abū Isḥāq, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Yazīd, from Ibn Masʿūd, who said: “The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had me recite: ‘Indeed, it is I who provide—possessor of strength, the Firm.’ (2)” This ḥadīth is singular (gharīb).
Abū Nuʿaym al-Mulāʾī and Qaʿnab ibn al-Muḥarrar said that Isrāʾīl died in the year 160 AH.
Ibn Saʿd and Shabbab (3) al-ʿUṣfūrī said that he died in the year 162 AH.
