the reliably precise narrators, recourse to his reports can no longer be accepted; however, if one only cites those of his narrations that agree with the reliable transmitters, there is no harm.
ʿAbd Allāh ibn Nāfiʿ—through Hishām ibn Saʿd, from Muʿādh ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Khubayb, from his father—reported that the Prophet ﷺ said: “When a boy can distinguish his right hand from his left, order him to pray.” (1)
I say: Muslim used him as an authority, and al-Bukhārī cited him for corroboration.
He died around the year 160 AH.
127 – Abū Jaʿfar al-Rāzī, ʿĪsā ibn Māhān * (4)
The scholar of Rayy.
It is said that he was born in Basra, that he used to travel to Rayy for trade and reside there.
He was born circa the 90s AH, while some of the Companions were still alive.
He narrated from ʿAṭāʾ ibn Abī Rabāḥ, ʿAmr ibn Dīnār, Qatādah, al-Rabīʿ ibn Anas, and a number of others.
(1) The chain of transmission is weak because of the weakness of Hisham ibn Saad. ʿAbd Allah ibn Nafiʿ, the son of Abu al-Saʾigh al-Makhzumi, is reliable and is among the transmitters accepted by Muslim. Abu Dawud also recorded the hadith (no. 497) in the Prayer section, “When a boy is to be instructed to pray,” through Sulayman ibn Dawud al-Mahri, from Hisham ibn Saad, from Muʿadh ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn Khubayb, from an unidentified Companion. Al-Tabarani included it as well in his work al-Saghir.
