In Ṣafar, Abū Jubayr al-Muṭʿim ibn ʿAdī ibn Nawfal—Nawfal being the brother of Hāshim ibn ʿAbd Manāf ibn Quṣayy—passed away as an idolater at an advanced age. He had been one of the sagacious and noble men of Quraysh. Concerning him the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Had al-Muṭʿim ibn ʿAdī been alive and spoken to me on behalf of these vile prisoners, I would have granted his request.” He enjoyed a special claim upon the Prophet ﷺ because he had helped annul the boycott document.

That same year Abū al-Sāʾib ʿUthmān ibn Maẓʿūn ibn Ḥabīb ibn Wahb ibn Ḥudhāfah ibn Jumāḥ al-Jumahī also died, only a short time after Badr. He had fought at Badr together with his two brothers, Qudāmah and ʿAbd Allah. ʿUthmān was among the earliest converts, embracing Islam after thirteen men had already done so. He joined the first migration to Abyssinia, and when he returned al-Walīd ibn al-Mughīrah offered him protection for a few days, which he later returned. ʿUthmān was known for constant fasting, night prayer, and devoted worship of Allah.

In the same year Abū Salamah ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAbd al-Asad ibn Hilāl ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿUmar ibn Makhzūm died as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was returning from Badr. He was the Prophet’s cousin and foster-brother; his mother was Barra bint ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib. One of the earliest believers, he had taken part in Badr. After his death, Umm Salamah married the Prophet ﷺ, and she related from him the supplication to say when struck by calamity. Some hold that he actually died in the third year, either shortly after the Battle of Uḥud or just before it.

During that same year ʿAbd Allah ibn al-Zubayr was born in Medina, while al-Miswar ibn Makhramah and Marwān ibn al-Ḥakam were born in Mecca.
