109 – Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar ibn Abī Kathīr al-Anṣārī, their freedman * (ʿ)
A Medinan ḥāfiẓ, and the brother of Ismāʿīl ibn Jaʿfar, Kathīr ibn Jaʿfar, Yaḥyā ibn Jaʿfar, and Yaʿqūb ibn Jaʿfar. The two most famous of the brothers are Muḥammad and Ismāʿīl.
He narrated from Abū Ṭuwālah ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, Zayd ibn Aslam, Sharīk ibn Abī Namr, Hishām ibn ʿUrwah, Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd, and others.
Among those who transmitted from him are Khālid ibn Makhlad, Saʿīd ibn Abī Maryam, ʿĪsā ibn Mīnāʾ Qālūn (1), ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Uwaysī, Isḥāq ibn Muḥammad al-Farwī, and many more.
Yaḥyā ibn Maʿīn and others declared him reliable.
He died alongside Sulaymān ibn Bilāl, around the year 170 AH, when he was in his early sixties. He belongs to the same generation as Ibn ʿUlayyah and Anas ibn ʿIyāḍ, and I have placed his entry here before that of his contemporaries because his death occurred earlier – and Allah knows best.
None of his narrations have reached us with an elevated chain except what appears in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī.
