Born: sometime before 100 AH.
He transmitted ḥadith from Muḥammad ibn al-Munkadir, Ḥassān ibn ʿAṭiyyah, Abū Ḥāzim al-Aʿraj, Ṣafwān ibn Sulaym, and others.
Those who narrated from him include Sufyān al-Thawrī—who was actually one of his own teachers— Ibn Wahb, Ādam ibn Abī Iyās, Saʿīd ibn Abī Maryam, ʿAlī ibn ʿAyyāsh, ʿAlī ibn al-Jaʿd, and many more.
He made a formal visit to the caliph al-Mahdī and related traditions in Baghdad.
Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal and other authorities declared him trustworthy.
Abū Bakr al-Khaṭīb said: It is reported that he was among the freedmen of ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb—may Allah be pleased with him—and that he later resided in ʿAsqalān.
I (the author) have not found an exact date for his death, but it seems he passed away in one of the years of the 160s AH.
Ibn Qudāmah informed us in his book—together with a group—saying:
“ʿUmar ibn Muḥammad narrated to us; Hibat Allāh ibn al-Ḥuṣayn narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad narrated to us; Abū Bakr al-Shāfiʿī narrated to us; Ibrāhīm ibn al-Haytham narrated to us; ʿAlī ibn ʿAyyāsh narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn Muṭarraf narrated to us, from Zayd ibn Aslam, from ʿAṭāʾ ibn Yasār, from ʿĀʾishah—
that the Prophet ﷺ said: ‘The purification of every hide is its tanning.’ (1)”
