Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

Anas ibn Mālik’s lifetime, for he was with him in Basra. One can only marvel that he did not hear anything from Anas, even though he actually saw Ṭāwūs while the latter was in iḥrām!

Abū ʿAmr al-Dānī relates that he recited the Qur’an to Abū Rajāʾ al-ʿAṭāridī.

Hammād ibn Zayd said, “He did not catch up with Abū al-Jawzāʾ”—those were his exact words.

He died on the last day of Shaʿbān in the year 165 AH. Anyone who said 162 AH was mistaken.

Al-Fakhr ʿAlī informed us; Ibn Ṭabarzadh informed us; ʿAbd al-Wahhāb informed us; Ibn Hazar-Marda informed us; Ibn Ḥabābah informed us; al-Baghawī told us; ʿAlī ibn al-Jaʿd told us; Abū al-Ashhab related to me, from Abū Naḍrah, who said:

“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed through the valley of Thamūd and said, ‘Press on quickly, for this is an accursed valley.’ (1)”

This is a mursal report, yet sound.

87 – Al-Rabīʿ ibn Ṣabīḥ al-Baṣrī * (T, Q)
The devoted worshipper, the imam, a freedman of the Banū Saʿd, and one of the notable shaykhs of Basra.

(1) Its transmitters are trustworthy, yet the chain is broken (mursal), as the author himself notes. Al-Bukhari also records it (8/95, Book of the Military Campaigns, chapter “The Prophet’s stop at al-Hijr—the dwellings of Thamud”) through the isnad: Abd al-Razzaq → Maʿmar → al-Zuhri → Salim → Ibn Umar. Ibn Umar relates: “When the Prophet ﷺ passed by al-Hijr he said: ‘Do not enter the dwellings of a people who wronged themselves, lest what struck them strike you—enter only while weeping.’ He then covered his head, hastened his pace, and did not slow down until he had crossed the valley.” (*) Ibn Saʿd, al-Tabaqat 7/277; Khalifa, al-Tarikh p. 430; al-Bukhari, al-Tarikh al-Kabir 3/278-279; idem, al-Tarikh al-Saghir 2/135; al-Tabari, Tarikh 8/128; Ibn Hibban, al-Duʿafaʾ pp. 132-133; Ibn Abi Hatim, al-Jarh wa-l-Taʿdil 3/464-465; Ibn Hibban, Kitab al-Majruhin 1/296; Ibn ʿAdi, al-Kamil pp. 267-268; Abu Nuʿaym, Hilyat al-Awliyaʾ 6/304-310; al-Mizzi, Tahdhib al-Kamal p. 408; al-Dhahabi, Tadhhib al-Tahdhib 1/219; al-Dhahabi, al-ʿIbar 1/234; Ibn Hajar, Tahdhib al-Tahdhib 3/247-248; idem, Khulasat Tadhhib al-Kamal p. 115; Ibn al-Imad, Shadharat al-Dhahab 1/247.
