83 – ʿImrān al-Qaṭṭān, Abū al-ʿAwwām b. Dāwar al-ʿAmmi * (4)
The Imām and hadith scholar, Abū al-ʿAwwām ʿImrān b. Dāwar al-ʿAmmi, a Basran cotton-dealer (al-Qaṭṭān).
He transmitted from: al-Ḥasan, Muḥammad b. Sīrīn, Bakr b. ʿAbd Allāh, Qatādah, Abū Jamrah al-Ḍubaʿī, and others.
Those who narrated from him include: Abū ʿĀṣim, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Mahdī, Abū Dāwūd al-Ṭayālisī, ʿAmr b. ʿĀṣim, ʿAbd Allāh b. Rajāʾ al-Ghudānī, and many others.
Yazīd b. Zurayʿ said, “ʿImrān al-Qaṭṭān was a Harūrī (1) who held the view of taking up the sword.”
Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal remarked, “I hope his hadith is sound.”
Ibn ʿAdī said, “His narrations are written down.”
Al-Nasāʾī judged him, “Weak in hadith.”
Abū Dāwūd said, “Weak. During the uprising of Ibrāhīm b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Ḥasan (2) he issued a severe legal opinion that sanctioned bloodshed.”
ʿAffān heard from him and deemed him reliable.
Ibn Maʿīn said, “He is nothing; he believed in rebellion but was not an active propagandist.”
Yahyā b. Saʿīd al-Qaṭṭān once mentioned him, spoke highly of him, and stated that they had been business partners.
He died sometime in the early 160s AH. May Allah have mercy on him.
I say: The Four Sunan include his narrations.
