one of them without his tossing that piece of bread to the prisoner he was guarding, while he contented himself with dates. I would feel embarrassed, so I would pick up the crust and throw it back to the man who had thrown it to me, and he would throw it back again.
Abū ʿAzīz was the brother of Muṣʿab ibn ʿUmayr. Some say he later accepted Islam, yet Ibn al-Kalbī and others maintain that he was killed at the Battle of Uḥud while still a disbeliever.
Ibn ʿAbbās related that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ fixed the ransom for the captives from the pre-Islamic side on the Day of Badr at four hundred.
Abū Dāwūd transmitted it in his Sunan through the chain of Shuʿbah—from Abū al-ʿAnbas—from Abū al-Shaʿthāʾ—from Ibn ʿAbbās.
Asbāṭ reported—from Ismāʿīl al-Suddī—that the ransom for the prisoners taken at Badr—al-ʿAbbās, his nephew ʿAqīl, and Nawfal—was four hundred dinars for each man.
Yūnus narrated, on the authority of Ibn Isḥāq: al-ʿAbbās ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Maʿbad told me, from some of his family, from Ibn ʿAbbās, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said on the Day of Badr: “I know that certain people from the Banū Hāshim and others have been brought out against their will; they have no desire to fight us. If any of you meets one of them, he must not kill him. Whoever meets Abū al-Bukhturī ibn Hishām, let him not kill him; and whoever meets al-ʿAbbās, let him not kill him, for he, too, was compelled to come.”
Abū Ḥudhayfah ibn ʿUtbah objected: “Shall we kill our fathers and brothers and spare al-ʿAbbās? By Allah, if I meet him I will strike him down with my sword!” When these words reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he said to ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb, “O Abū Ḥafṣ, will someone strike the face of the Messenger of Allah’s uncle with a sword?” ʿUmar replied, “O Messenger of Allah, allow me to strike off his head, for by Allah he has become a hypocrite.”
Abū Ḥudhayfah later used to say, “By Allah, I have never felt secure from the sin of that word I spoke; I remain afraid of it unless Allah wipes it out for me with martyrdom.” He was indeed martyred at the Battle of al-Yamāmah.
