Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

he said, “I heard Yahyā ibn Yamān say, ‘I heard al-Thawrī remark: I do not transmit even one out of every ten (reports).’”

Then Yahyā added, “I have written twenty thousand from him.”

Al-Ashjaʿī informed me that he had written thirty thousand from him.

Abū Nuʿaym said: I heard Sufyān say, “Faith increases and decreases.”

Hārūn ibn Abī Hārūn al-ʿAbdī related: Ḥayyān ibn Mūsā narrated to us; Ibn al-Mubārak narrated to us; he heard Sufyān declare, “Whoever claims that ‘Say: He is Allah, the One’ [Ikhlāṣ 1] is created has disbelieved in Allah.”

Zayd ibn al-Ḥubāb said: Sufyān used to give ʿAlī precedence over ʿUthmān.

ʿAththām ibn ʿAlī reported: I heard al-Thawrī say, “Love for both ʿAlī and ʿUthmān is found only in the hearts of noble men.”

Ibn al-Mubārak quoted Sufyān as saying, “Be good to the people of the sunnah, for they are strangers.”

Muʾammal ibn Ismāʿīl said: Sufyān did not perform the funeral prayer over Ibn Abī Rawwād (1) on account of irjāʾ.

Shuʿayb ibn Ḥarb related that Sufyān said, “What you have written will not benefit you until silent recitation of ‘In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful’ during prayer is dearer to you than reciting it aloud.”

Wakīʿ reported from Sufyān concerning hadith: “Nothing can compare with it for one who seeks Allah by it.” He also narrated from him: “A man ought to compel his child to pursue knowledge, for he will be held accountable for him.”

ʿAbd al-Ṣamad ibn Ḥassān said: I heard Sufyān say, “The chain of transmission is the believer’s weapon,”
