ʿAbd al-Muʾmin al-Nasafī said, “I asked Ṣāliḥ ibn Muḥammad Jazara about Sufyān and Mālik, and he replied:
‘No one, in my estimation, surpasses Sufyān. He possessed the strongest memory and narrated the greatest number of hadith. Mālik, however, was extremely selective about the men from whom he took narrations. Sufyān’s retention is superior to that of Shuʿbah, and he transmitted more traditions: his narrations reach about thirty thousand, whereas those of Shuʿbah are roughly ten thousand.’
Aḥmad ibn Hibat Allāh related to us—ʿAbd al-Muʿizz ibn Muḥammad informed us—Zāhir ibn Ṭāhir informed us—Abū Saʿd al-Kanjarūdhī informed us—Abū Saʿīd ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad informed us—Muḥammad ibn Ayyūb informed us—Muḥammad ibn Kathīr informed us—Sufyān al-Thawrī informed us; he said: “Mughīrah ibn al-Nuʿmān narrated to me; Saʿīd ibn Jubayr narrated to me, from Ibn ʿAbbās, who said:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘You will be resurrected barefoot, naked and uncircumcised.’ Then he recited, ‘As We began the first creation, We shall repeat it—a promise binding upon Us; We shall certainly do it’ (Al-Anbiyāʾ 104). He added, ‘Indeed, the first to be clothed on the Day of Resurrection will be Abraham, peace be upon him. And some people from among my Companions will be led off to the left, and I will say, “My Companions, my Companions!” It will be said, “They kept turning back on their heels after you departed from them.” I will then say what the righteous servant Jesus said: “I was a witness over them while I remained among them”… up to His words: “the Almighty, the All-Wise” (1).’
It was recorded by al-Bukhārī (2) on the authority of Ibn Kathīr.
