You, however, are a people of limited means; therefore, let none of them escape except in return for ransom or by the stroke of the sword.”
I said, “Except Suhayl ibn Bayḍāʾ—he is not to be killed, for I heard him speak of Islam.” He remained silent, and never was there a day when I feared that Allah might rain stones upon me from the sky more than that day—until the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Except Suhayl ibn Bayḍāʾ.”
Ibn Isḥāq narrated—on the authority of al-Barāʾ or someone else—that a man from the Anṣār brought al-ʿAbbās as a captive to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Al-ʿAbbās said, “This is not the man who captured me.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, “Allah has supported you with a noble angel.”
Ibn Isḥāq also said: Someone who heard ʿIkrimah report from Ibn ʿAbbās told me that the one who captured al-ʿAbbās was Abū al-Yasar Kaʿb ibn ʿAmr al-Sulamī. The Prophet ﷺ asked, “How did you capture him?” He replied, “A man closed in on him—the like of whom I have never seen before or after—of such-and-such appearance.” The Prophet ﷺ said, “A noble angel assisted you against him.”
He then said to al-ʿAbbās, “Ransom yourself, your nephew ʿAqīl ibn Abī Ṭālib, and Nawfal ibn al-Ḥārith.” Al-ʿAbbās refused, saying, “I was a Muslim; they only compelled me.” The Prophet ﷺ replied, “Allah knows best your real state. If what you claim is true, Allah will reward you for it. As for what is outwardly apparent, you were against us—so ransom yourself.”
Al-ʿAbbās had brought with him twenty uqiyyahs of gold. He said, “O Messenger of Allah, count this toward my ransom.” The Prophet ﷺ answered, “No. That is something Allah has granted us from you.”
ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn ʿImrān al-Zuhrī—who is weak—said: “Muḥammad ibn … narrated to me.”
