Ibn Abī al-Dunyā records the same lineage on the authority of Muḥammad ibn Khalaf al-Taymī, except that he omits Muqidh and al-Ḥārith and, after Masrūq, inserts Ḥamzah; the remainder is identical.
Al-Haytham ibn ʿAdī and Ibn Saʿd likewise cite this pedigree, stating that he is from Thawr Ṭābikhah. Some have claimed that he belongs to Thawr of Hamdān, but that opinion is of no value.
He is the Shaykh al-Islām, the Imām of the ḥuffāẓ, the foremost of the practicing scholars of his era: Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Thawrī, the Kufan, an independent mujtahid and the author of the work al-Jāmiʿ.
He was born—by unanimous report—in 97 AH. Still a youth, he pursued knowledge under the care of his father, the truthful traditionist Saʿīd ibn Masrūq al-Thawrī, who had kept company with al-Shaʿbī and Khaythamah ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, was counted among the trustworthy Kufans, and is reckoned with the younger Successors (tābiʿūn).
The Six canonical compilers all included his narrations in their collections.
Those who narrated from him include his children—Sufyān the Imām, ʿUmar, and Mubārak—together with Shuʿbah ibn al-Ḥajjāj, Zāʾidah, Abū al-Aḥwaṣ, Abū ʿAwānah, ʿUmar ibn ʿUbayd al-Ṭanāfisī, and others.
He died in 126 AH.
