They are unanimous that Shuʿbah died in 160 AH, in Basra. It is also said that he passed away at the very beginning of that year—Allah knows best.
Khalīfah states in his Tabaqāt: “Shuʿbah, the client (mawlā) of the Ashāqir from the Azd, whose kunya was Abū Bistām, died in Rajab 160 AH; he and my grandfather died in the same month.”
This concludes the biography, which the ḥāfiẓ Ibn ʿAbd al-Hādī recited to me in 733 AH.
Among the rarer transmissions of Shuʿbah is the following chain: Aḥmad ibn Salāmah and Ibn al-Bukhārī related to us, from Abū al-Makārim al-Labbān; Abū ʿAlī al-Ḥaddād informed us; Abū Nuʿaym informed us; ʿAbd Allāh ibn Jaʿfar narrated to us; Yūnus ibn Ḥabīb narrated to us; Abū Dāwūd narrated to us; Shuʿbah narrated to us; Abū al-Jūdiyy told me; I heard Saʿīd ibn al-Muhājir report from al-Miqdām ibn Maʿdīkarib that the Prophet ﷺ said:
“No man who stays with a people as a guest and awakes deprived of hospitality but that it becomes incumbent upon every Muslim to support him until he receives the provision due for that night from their crops and their wealth.” (1)
It was also transmitted by Abū Dāwūd through Musaddad, from Yaḥyā, from Shuʿbah.
Saʿīd is a Syrian transmitter who is unknown, and Abū al-Jūdiyy—whose name is al-Ḥārith ibn ʿUmayr—is likewise a Syrian.
Abū al-Fahm ibn Aḥmad al-Sulamī informed us; Abū Muḥammad ibn Qudāmah informed us. (ḥ)
Sunqur ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Zaynī likewise informed us; ʿAbd al-Laṭīf ibn Yūsuf informed us; they both said:
Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Bāqī informed us; Muḥammad ibn Abī Naṣr al-Ḥāfiẓ informed us; ʿAlī ibn Baqāʾ al-Warrāq informed us; Abū al-Fatḥ Aḥmad ibn ʿUmar al-Jahāzī informed us; Abū Isḥāq Muḥammad ibn al-Qāsim ibn Shuʿbān narrated to us; Aḥmad ibn al-Ḥusayn narrated to us; Abū Ḥafṣ al-Fallās narrated to us—
