“The Prophet ﷺ and his Companions struck the idolaters on the Day of Badr a total of one hundred and forty casualties—seventy prisoners and seventy slain—whereas on the Day of Uhud they struck seventy of us.”
Hammad ibn Salamah, on the authority of Hisham ibn ʿUrwah, from his father, from Usamah ibn Zayd, relates that the Prophet ﷺ left ʿUthman and Usamah ibn Zayd to look after his daughter Ruqayyah during the Badr campaign. Zayd ibn Harithah then arrived on al-ʿAdbaʾ, the Prophet’s she-camel, bearing the good news. Usamah says, “I heard the clamour, so I went out and there was my father bringing the glad tidings. By Allah, I did not take it as true until we actually saw the captives. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ even allotted ʿUthman his share of the spoils.”
ʿAbdān ibn ʿUthmān states: Ibn al-Mubarak narrated to us; he said: ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Yazid ibn Jabir told us, from ʿAbd al-Rahman—a man from the people of Sanaʿa—who said: “The Negus sent for Jaʿfar ibn Abi Talib and his companions. They entered to find him in a room wearing worn clothes and sitting on the bare earth. Jaʿfar recounted, ‘We became uneasy when we saw him in that condition. He said, “Rejoice in what will please you! A scout of mine has come from the region of your homeland and informed me that Allah has granted victory to His Prophet ﷺ, destroyed his enemy, and taken So-and-so and So-and-so prisoner. They met in a valley called Badr, thick with araq trees; it is as though I can see it—the place where I used to herd a man of Banū Ḍumrah’s camels.” I then asked him, “Why are you sitting on the ground without a carpet beneath you, wearing such threadbare garments?” He replied, “We find in what Allah revealed to Jesus, peace be upon him, that it is incumbent upon the servants of Allah to show humility whenever He bestows a new favor upon them. So when Allah granted me the victory of His Prophet, I adopted this posture of humility.”’”
Al-Waqidi recounts a similar story in his al-Maghāzī, though without an isnād.
