al-Fuḍayl ibn Yaḥyā reported to us; ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Shurayḥ informed us; ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad al-Manīʿī informed us; ʿAlī ibn al-Jaʿd narrated to us; Shuʿbah narrated, on the authority of Muḥammad ibn al-Munkadir, who said:
“I heard Jābir say: I asked permission to enter upon the Prophet ﷺ, and he said, ‘Who is this?’ I replied, ‘It is I.’ He said, ‘It is I, it is I,’ as though he disliked the expression.”
Al-Bukhārī recorded the report (1) through Abū al-Walīd, from Shuʿbah ibn al-Ḥajjāj, and his chain is one tier higher.
Abū Zurʿah said: I heard Muqātil—meaning ibn Muḥammad—say: I heard Wakīʿ say, “I hope Allah will raise Shuʿbah many degrees in Paradise because he defended the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.”
Al-Kudaymī related: Yaʿqūb al-Ḥaḍramī narrated to us, saying, “Shuʿbah the virtuous, Abū Bisṭām the Stout, narrated to us—from men who were stout.”
Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Raqāshī transmitted from Ḥammād ibn Zayd that whenever Ḥammād reported from Shuʿbah he would say, “The Stout has narrated to us from the stout ones … Shuʿbah the virtuous, Abū Bisṭām.” (2)
Al-Kudaymī also narrated from Wahb ibn Jarīr, who said: “My father spoke to Shuʿbah about Abān ibn Abī ʿAyyāsh and Salm al-ʿAlawī, asking him to forgo criticizing them. He accepted with respect to Salm, but later reconsidered.”
Abū al-Walīd said: Ḥammād ibn Zayd told me, “If Shuʿbah and I differ over a hadith, I adopt his opinion.”
I asked, “How so, Abū Ismāʿīl?”
He replied, “Shuʿbah would not be content until he had heard a hadith twenty times, whereas I am satisfied to hear it once.”
It is also related from ʿAbd al-Quddūs ibn Muḥammad al-Ḥabḥābī: “I heard my father say: When …”
