Musa ibn ʿUqbah then cited the verses that were revealed in Surah al-Anfal about this campaign, including its closing passage.
Some of the captives said, “Messenger of Allah, we were Muslims; we were forced out against our will. Why, then, is ransom being taken from us?” Thereupon the verse was sent down: “Say to those captives who are in your hands: If Allah knows any good in your hearts, He will give you better than what has been taken from you and will forgive you” (Al-Anfal 70).
From this account I have omitted much of the authentic material already mentioned, deeming what has preceded sufficient.
Ibn Lahiʿah, transmitting from Abu al-Aswad on the authority of ʿUrwah, relates the same story in wording similar to that of Musa ibn ʿUqbah. He does not, however, mention Abu Dawud al-Mazani in connection with the killing of Abu al-Bukhtari and adds only a brief supplement.
Both he and Ibn ʿUqbah state that the Muslims who were killed numbered six from the Quraysh and eight from the Ansar.
They also say that forty-nine idolaters were killed and thirty-nine taken captive.
Ibn Ishaq, on the other hand, reports that four men from the Quraysh and seven from the Ansar were martyred, that a little over forty idolaters were killed, and that the prisoners numbered forty-four.
Al-Zuhri, citing ʿUrwah, says: “The idolaters were routed; more than seventy of them were killed and a similar number taken prisoner.”
The hadith of al-Baraʾ recorded by al-Bukhari corroborates this figure; he said:
