“So go to your clan, and I will assume the whole cost.” Ḥakīm then hurried among the notables of Quraysh with this offer.
ʿUtbah mounted his camel and rode along the lines of the idolaters, proclaiming, “My people, heed me and leave this man alone. If he is a liar, other Arabs—men who are closely related to you—will take it upon themselves to kill him. But if you slay them yourselves, each of you will forever see before him the killer of his brother, his son, his nephew, or his cousin, and that will breed rancor and lasting enmity among you.
“If this man seeks kingship, you will simply live under the rule of your own kinsman. And if he is a prophet, you will never kill a prophet; you will only cover yourselves with disgrace. Abū Jahl then went to Ibn al-Ḥaḍramī—the brother of the slain man—and said, “See how ʿUtbah is disheartening the people. He has undertaken to pay your brother’s blood money and claims you will accept it. Are you not ashamed to take the diyah?” He also told Quraysh, “ʿUtbah knows you will prevail over this man and those with him—among them his own son and cousins—yet he hates to see you succeed.” Turning to ʿUtbah he sneered, “Your belly has swollen!” He ordered the women to lament for ʿAmr, and they began wailing, “Alas for ʿAmr! Alas for ʿAmr!”—stirring the men to battle.
Some men even rose and exposed themselves, taunting Quraysh, so the tribe took up its battle positions.
