Saʿdān ibn Naṣr narrated to us; Abū Qatādah al-Harrānī narrated from him; from Misʿar; from ʿAlī ibn al-Aqmar; from Abū Juḥayfah, who said:
“The Prophet ﷺ would remain standing in prayer until his feet became swollen and cracked.
Someone said to him, ‘Has not everything of your past and future sin already been forgiven?’
He replied, ‘Shall I not, then, be a grateful servant?’”
Aḥmad ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Ṣūrī and Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī al-Sulamī also informed us; they said:
“Abū al-Qāsim al-Ḥusayn ibn Hibat Allāh ibn Ṣaṣrā informed us; Abū al-Qāsim al-Asadī and Abū Yaʿlā ibn al-Hubūbī likewise informed us; and Abū al-Maʿālī al-Qarāfī informed us; Abū al-Barakāt al-Ḥasan ibn Muḥammad informed us; Abū al-ʿAshāʾir Muḥammad ibn Khalīl informed us; and ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad, Aḥmad ibn Muʾmin, ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-Munʿim ibn al-Qawwās, and ʿAbd al-Munʿim ibn ʿAbd al-Laṭīf also informed us. They said:
‘Abū Naṣr Muḥammad ibn Hibat Allāh al-Shāfiʿī informed us; Abū Yaʿlā ibn al-Hubūbī informed us,’ and the three of them added:
‘Abū al-Qāsim ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad al-Maṣīṣī informed us; ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿUthmān al-Tamīmī informed us; Ibrāhīm ibn Abī Thābit informed us; Saʿdān ibn Naṣr al-Mukharramī narrated to us; ʿAbd Allāh ibn Wāqid narrated to us; from Sufyān — or Misʿar — from Ibn al-Aqmar; from Abū Juḥayfah, who said, “The Prophet ﷺ would stand until his feet became swollen and cracked (1) …,” and he mentioned the rest of the report.’
This chain is transmitted only by ʿAbd Allāh ibn Wāqid; likewise, Abū Qatādah al-Harrānī relates it in this fashion.
The version of the ḥadīth transmitted by Muḥammad ibn Bishr al-ʿAbdī from Misʿar is defective.
Khallād ibn Yaḥyā and a number of others also narrated it from Misʿar, but with the chain: from Ziyād ibn ʿIlāqah, from al-Mughīrah ibn Shuʿbah (2). This, and Allah knows best, is the most reliable version.
