and that is indeed true, for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said,
“I entered Paradise and there I saw a palace. I asked, ‘Whose palace is this?’
He answered, ‘It is ʿUmar’s.’
I wanted to go inside it, but then I remembered ʿUmar’s sense of protective jealousy.”
ʿUmar exclaimed, “O Messenger of Allah, would I ever feel jealous toward you?!” (1)
Ahmad ibn Isḥāq ibn al-Muʾayyad, the ascetic, informed us; al-Fath ibn ʿAbd al-Salām in Baghdad informed us; Hibatu Allah ibn al-Ḥusayn informed us; Ahmad ibn Muḥammad ibn al-Naqqūr told us; ʿĪsā ibn ʿAlī dictated to us in the year 389 AH. He said:
“It was read aloud to Abū al-Qāsim al-Baghawī while I was listening, and it was said to him: ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAwn al-Kharrāz narrated to you; Muḥammad ibn Bishr narrated to us; from Misʿar; from Qatādah; from Anas ibn Mālik: that the Prophet ﷺ stood in prayer until his feet became swollen.” (2)
There is a disagreement over the isnād that passes through Misʿar, as you will see.
By this same chain to ʿĪsā ibn ʿAlī: Ismāʿīl ibn ʿAbbās al-Warrāq narrated to us; he said
(1) Its chain of transmission is weak because of the unreliability of Muhammad b. Yunus al-Kudaymi and his shaykh Nail b. Najih. However, the report concerning the Prophet’s entry into Paradise and his vision of the palace is sound and firmly established through another route. Al-Bukhari records it, 7/34, in the section “Virtues of the Companions – The Merits of Umar b. al-Khattab,” through al-Hajjaj b. Minhal, from Abd al-Aziz b. al-Majishun, who said: Muhammad b. al-Munkadir related to us from Jabir: The Prophet ﷺ said, “I saw myself entering Paradise where I beheld al-Rumaysa, the wife of Abu Talha. I heard footsteps and asked, ‘Who is that?’ It was said, ‘Bilal.’ I then saw a palace with a maiden in its courtyard and asked, ‘Whose palace is this?’ It was said, ‘Umar’s.’ I wanted to enter and look at it, but I remembered your sense of jealousy.” Umar replied, “May my father and mother be your ransom, Messenger of Allah! Would I ever be jealous of you?”
Al-Bukhari also transmits the narration at 9/284 (Book of Marriage) through Muhammad b. Abi Bakr al-Muqaddami, and at 12/366 through Amr b. Ali; both routes go via al-Muʿtamir, from Ubayd Allah al-Umari, from Muhammad b. al-Munkadir. Muslim records it as well (no. 2394) through several chains from Sufyan, from Amr, and from Ibn al-Munkadir, from Jabir. It is found in the Musnad 3/372, 386, 390. A supporting narration from Abu Hurayra appears in al-Bukhari 7/35, 9/284, 12/366 and in Muslim (no. 3395).
(2) The reliable students of Misar reported the hadith from Ziyad b. Ilaqah, from al-Mughira. Only Muhammad b. Bishr differed, narrating it—as shown here—from Misar, from Qatada, from Anas. Al-Bazzar recorded the report and commented that the correct version is “from Misar, from Ziyad.”
