Jaʿfar ibn ʿAwn said, “I heard Misʿar giving counsel to his son Kidām:
‘I have bestowed on you, Kidām, my advice;
So listen to the words of a father who cares for you.
As for joking and disputation—leave them both,
Two qualities I would never approve of in a friend.
I have tried them and found no praise in them,
Whether for a next-door neighbor or a fellow traveler.
Ignorance disgraces a youth among his people,
No matter how noble his lineage among mankind.’ (1)
I suspect that the following two verses are by Ibn al-Mubārak:
‘Whoever seeks a righteous companion
Let him attend the circle of Misʿar ibn Kidām;
There you will find serenity and dignified calm,
And its people are chaste—the very best of men.’ (2)
Among the lofty chains of transmission he relates: Imām Abū al-Faraj ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Muḥammad, together with a group who granted us authorization, informed us, saying:
ʿUmar ibn Muḥammad al-Muʾaddib informed us; Hibatuʾllāh ibn Muḥammad informed us; Abū Ṭālib Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad informed us; Abū Bakr Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Shāfiʿī narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn Sulaymān narrated to us; ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Mūsā, Thābit the ascetic, and Khallād ibn Yaḥyā narrated to us, saying:
Misʿar narrated to us from Muḥārib ibn Dithār, from Jābir, who said, “I entered the mosque and found the Messenger of Allah ﷺ seated. He said, ‘Stand up and pray two rakʿahs.’” (3)
With this same chain: Abū Bakr al-Shāfiʿī informed us; Muḥammad ibn Yūnus narrated to us; Nāʾil ibn Najīḥ narrated to us; Misʿar narrated to us from ʿAbd al-Malik ibn Maysarah, from Muṣʿab ibn Saʿd, from Muʿādh ibn Jabal, who said:
“I bear witness that ʿUmar is in Paradise, because of what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw …”
