Al-Daraqazzī (1) informed us; ʿAbd al-Wahhāb al-Anmāṭī informed us; Abū Muḥammad ibn Hazārmarda (2) the preacher informed us; ʿUbayd Allah ibn Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq informed us; ʿAbd Allah ibn Muḥammad al-Baghawī reported to us; ʿAlī ibn al-Jaʿd narrated to us; Ibn Abī Dhīb, from Saʿīd ibn Samʿān, who said, “I heard Abū Hurayrah speaking to Abū Qatādah:
‘From the Prophet ﷺ who said: “A pledge of allegiance will be sworn to a man between the Corner and the Station. No one will violate the Sacred House except its own people; but once they violate it, ask not about the destruction of the Arabs. Then the Abyssinians will arrive and demolish it so completely that it will never be rebuilt thereafter; they are the ones who will extract its treasure (3).”’
By this same chain: Ibn Abī Dhīb narrated from Shuʿbah—the freedman of Ibn ʿAbbās—who said:
Al-Miswar ibn Makhramah entered upon Ibn ʿAbbās while the latter was wearing a garment of isṭabraq (brocade). He said, “What is this, O Abū al-ʿAbbās?”
He replied, “What is what?”
He said, “This is brocade.”
He answered, “I did not realize that, and I do not think the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade it when he forbade it except because of pride and arrogance; and—praise be to Allah—we are not like that.”
He said, “Then what are these birds on the kānūn (4)—meaning images?”
He replied, “Do you not see how we have burned them in the fire?”
When al-Miswar went out, Ibn ʿAbbās said, “Take this garment off me, and cut off the heads of these figures and birds.”
