Divorce, manumission, and the oaths sworn in allegiance.
He continued, “When I came to my senses I consulted Makḥūl, Yaḥyā ibn Abī Kathīr, ʿAṭāʾ ibn Abī Rabāḥ, and ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUbayd ibn ʿUmayr. They told me, ‘Nothing is required of you; you acted under compulsion.’
Yet my heart found no rest until I had separated from my wives, emancipated my slaves, given up my wealth, and made expiation for my oaths. Tell me—would Sufyān have done that?”
ʿAbbās ibn al-Walīd said: “Abū ʿAbd Allāh ibn Fulān narrated to us: I heard al-Awzāʿī say:
‘We keep clear of five doctrines attributed to the people of Iraq and five attributed to the people of the Ḥijaz.
From the people of Iraq: drinking intoxicants; eating when the dawn light appears in Ramaḍān; saying that the Friday prayer is valid only in seven garrison-towns; delaying the ʿAṣr prayer until the shadow of every object is four times its length; and fleeing on the day of battle.
From the people of the Ḥijaz: listening to musical entertainment; combining two prayers without a valid excuse; temporary marriage with women; exchanging one dirham for two or one dinar for two even when the transaction is hand to hand; and approaching women from behind (1).’
(1) Ibn al-Qayyim writes in Zad al-Maad, 4/257 (Muassasat al-Risalah, ed.): “Anyone who claims that some of the salaf allowed a man to have intercourse with his wife through the anus is mistaken. Several hadiths from the Prophet expressly forbid it.”
He then cites the evidence:
• Ahmad, 2/444, 479, and Abu Dawud, 2162, transmit from Abu Hurayra: “Cursed is the one who approaches a woman through her anus.” Al-Busiri judged the chain sound. A corroborating report from Uqba b. Amir appears in Ibn Adi, p. 211 A, and in al-Tabarani’s al-Awsat (quoted in Majmaʿ, 4/299) with a good isnad, thereby strengthening the prohibition.
• Ahmad, 2/277, 344, and Ibn Majah, 1923, record the wording: “Allah will not look at a man who has intercourse with his wife through her anus.” A supporting narration with a good chain comes from Ibn Abbas in Tirmidhi, and Ibn Hibban authenticated it (no. 1302).
• Another version found in Tirmidhi, 135; Ahmad, 2/408, 476; Abu Dawud, 3904; Ibn Majah, 693; and Darimi, 1/259, states: “Whoever has intercourse with a menstruating woman, with a woman through her anus, or consults a soothsayer and believes him has disbelieved in what was sent down to Muhammad.” Its isnad is strong.
• Tirmidhi, 1164, and Darimi, 1/260, relate from Ali b. Talq that the Prophet said: “Do not approach women from the rear; Allah is not shy of stating the truth.” Tirmidhi graded it fair (hasan) and Ibn Hibban declared it authentic.
• A further corroborating report from Khuzayma b. Thabit is found in al-Shafi‘i, 2/360; Ahmad, 2/213; and al-Tahawi, 2/25, with a sound chain; Ibn … (text unfinished)
