Bishr ibn al-Mundhir—the judge of Maṣṣīṣah—said: “I once saw al-Awzāʿī, and the reverent awe that enveloped him made him look as though he were blind.”
Al-Walīd ibn Mazīd reported: I heard al-Awzāʿī say, “It used to be said: Woe to those who study jurisprudence for anything other than worship, and woe to those who make the sacred things lawful by invoking doubtful pretexts.”
ʿAbbās ibn al-Walīd ibn Mazīd related: Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Sulamī told me, and Muḥammad ibn al-Awzāʿī told me:
“My father said to me, ‘My son, I am going to tell you something; do not speak of it for as long as I live. I saw in a dream that I was made to stand (1) at the gate of Paradise. The two leaves of the gate were seized and wrenched from their place. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ appeared, accompanied by Abū Bakr and ʿUmar, struggling to restore them. They put them back, the gate shifted again, and they set it right once more.
“‘The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said to me, “ʿAbd al-Raḥmān! Will you not hold it with us?” So I stepped forward and helped them until the gate was secured.’”
Aḥmad ibn ʿAlī al-Abbār said: Yaḥyā ibn Ayyūb narrated to us; al-Ḥawārī ibn Abī al-Ḥawārī narrated to us:
“Al-Awzāʿī entered upon Abū Jaʿfar, and when he wished to leave he asked to be excused from wearing black. Abū Jaʿfar granted his request. When al-Awzāʿī came out, they asked him about it, and he replied, ‘No pilgrim has ever entered the state of consecration in black, no deceased person has ever been shrouded in it, and no bride has ever been adorned with it.’”
ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd ibn Bakkār said: Ibn Abī al-ʿIshrīn narrated to us:
“I heard a governor stationed on the coastal frontier say—after we had buried al-Awzāʿī and were still at the graveside—‘May Allah have mercy on you, Abū ʿAmr; I used to fear you more than the one who appointed me.’”
Muḥammad ibn ʿUbayd al-Ṭanafīsī said: “I was with Sufyān al-Thawrī when a man came and said, ‘In a dream I saw as though a sweet-scented sprig from the West had been lifted up.’ Sufyān replied, ‘If your vision is true, then al-Awzāʿī has died.’ They wrote the date down, and it proved to be exactly so on that very day.”
ʿAbbās al-Dūrī said: “I heard Yaḥyā say, ‘Al-Awzāʿī passed away in the public bath.’”
