and does our march qualify as ribāṭ (standing guard on the frontier)?

I answered, “Reports have come down from the Prophet ﷺ in which he said, ‘Whoever’s emigration is to Allah and His Messenger, then his emigration is indeed to Allah and His Messenger (1)…,’” and he then went on with the story (2).

Yaʿqūb ibn Shaybah said: Abū ʿAbd al-Malik al-Fārisī—that is, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz—narrated to us; al-Firyābī narrated to us; al-Awzāʿī narrated to us, who said:

When ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAlī—meaning, the uncle of as-Saffāḥ—had finished slaughtering the Umayyads, he sent for me, and on that very day he had already killed a little over

The Prophet ﷺ said: “Actions are judged only by intentions. Each person will have only what he intended. Whoever migrated for worldly gain or to marry a woman, his migration is for that for which he migrated.” (2) The remainder of the episode is found in Ibn ʿAsakir, Tarikh, MS: 10/48b–49a. It relates that the governor again struck the ground with his cane, harder than before, while those around him bit their hands in anger. He then asked: “O Awzaʿi, what is your ruling on the blood of the Umayyads?” I replied: “The reports from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ state that ‘It is not permissible to shed the blood of a Muslim except in three cases…’.” He struck the ground still harder, fell silent for a while, then raised his head and said: “O Awzaʿi, what is your ruling on the property of the Umayyads?” I answered: “If it was unlawfully acquired, it is unlawful for you; if it was lawfully acquired, Allah has permitted it to you only with due right.” Again he struck the ground harder and was silent for a time. Then he said: “O Awzaʿi, I am thinking of appointing you as judge.” I replied: “May Allah set the emir aright. I have long been attached to your predecessors, who recognised my rights. If the emir wishes to complete what his fathers began, let him do so.” He asked, “Do you seek permission to leave?” I said, “I have dependents who need my care and protection.” He said, “Very well.” I left, mounted my animal, and departed. When I reached Beirut, I found ʿUthman waiting with the courier. I asked, “Has the emir reconsidered concerning me?” He replied, “The emir neglected to give you your gratuity and has now sent you two hundred dinars.” Ahmad ibn Abi al-ʿIshrin (ʿAbd al-Hamid) said: Awzaʿi did not leave his place before distributing the entire amount to orphans, widows, and the needy, and then wrote letters retracting what he had earlier heard from Thawr ibn Yazid regarding qadar (predestination). The present author has cited the various parts of this story at different points in the biography.
