Ibrāhīm ibn Abī Yahyā, through Dāwūd ibn al-Ḥuṣayn, from him; he then concealed this and passed it off as though it came directly from ʿIkrimah. (1)
ʿAbbād died among his own people in 152 AH.
- ʿAbbād ibn Kathīr al-Thaqafī al-Baṣrī * (D, Q)
A devout worshipper who later took up residence in Mecca.
He transmitted ḥadith from Yahyā ibn Abī Kathīr, Thābit, Abū ʿImrān al-Jawnī, Abū al-Zubayr, and several others.
Those who reported from him include Ibrāhīm ibn Adham, Abū Nuʿaym, Muḥammad al-Firyābī, and others.
Al-Bukhārī said: “They abandoned him.”
Ibn Maʿīn remarked: “He is nothing.”
Ibn Abī Rizmah said: “I have never seen anyone more ascetic than he, but when it comes to ḥadith he has nothing to offer.”
I (the author) say: He is the transmitter of the report, “Backbiting is more serious than fornication.” (2)
He relates it from al-Jurayrī, from Abū Naḍrah, from Abū Saʿīd and Jābir, traced back to the Prophet.
(1) Al-Majruhin, vol. 2, p. 166. Shaykh Ahmad Shakir—may God have mercy on him—erred when, in his commentary on the Musnad (hadith no. 3318), he declared ‛Abbad b. Mansur reliable. No recognized authority in the science of al-jarh wa-l-ta‛dil has ever graded him trustworthy; they all judged him weak because he practiced tadlis, had a poor memory, and became confused in his narration.

(2) This report is not authentic. The author cites it in al-Mizan under the biography of ‛Abbad b. Kathir and lists it among his munkar (rejected) narrations. It is also recorded in Ibn Hibban’s al-Du‛afa 2:168, in the same biography, through the chain: Asbat b. Muhammad — Abu Raja al-Khurāsāni — ‛Abbad b. Kathir — al-Hasan — Abu Nadrah — Abu Sa‛id and Jabir. Ibn Hibban adds: “Abu Raja, namely Ruh b. al-Musayyab, is likewise of no worth.”
