- Ḥusayn ibn Wāqid, Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Qurashī (M, 4)
A leading imam, chief judge of Marw and its foremost scholar, Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Qurashī was the freedman of the governor ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿĀmir ibn Kurayz.
He narrated from ʿIkrimah, Ibn Buraydah, Yazīd al-Naḥwī, Muḥammad ibn Ziyād, ʿAbd al-Malik ibn ʿUmayr, and many others.
Those who reported from him include his son ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥusayn, al-Faḍl al-Sīnānī, Zayd ibn al-Hubāb, ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥasan ibn Shaqīq, and a number of others.
Al-Nasāʾī said, “There is no harm in him.”
Aḥmad remarked, “Some of his hadiths are anomalous.”
Ibn Maʿīn stated, “He is reliable.”
It was also said that he used to carry his own merchandise from the marketplace, yet in Marw he enjoyed great dignity and distinction.
It is related from him that he said, “I read to al-Aʿmash, and he told me, ‘No one who has ever read to me has recited better than you!’”
I add: Among his unacceptable narrations is the report he attributes to the Prophet ﷺ: “I would love to have before us a fine white loaf made from lightly-tinted wheat, covered with clarified butter and milk.”⦗1⦘
That ḥadith meets Muslim’s criteria.
He also transmits, through Abū al-Zubayr from Jābir, a report traced back to the Prophet: “I was brought the keys of the world while mounted on a horse…"
