ʿUmar addressed the people at al-Jābiya and said: ‘The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, stood in a place like mine and said:
“Treat my Companions well, then those who follow them, then those who follow them. After that there will come a people among whom a man will swear an oath before he is asked to do so, and will bear witness before he is called to testify. Whoever among you wishes to attain the spacious center of Paradise, let him keep to the community, for Satan is with the lone person, whereas he is further away from two. Let no man be alone with a woman, for the third of them is Satan. Whoever among you is gladdened by his good deed and saddened by his bad deed—that person is a believer.”’
