he purchased Hammād ibn Zayd’s father, freed him, and thus Hammād became Jarīr’s freedman.
Among the prominent authorities who narrated from Jarīr were Ayyūb al-Sakhtiyānī and al-Layth ibn Saʿd, the latter receiving from him a lengthy compilation.
He is counted among the reliable narrators of the Muslim community.
The leading imams who transmitted from him include Ayyūb, Ibn ʿAwn, al-Thawrī, Hammād ibn Zayd, al-Layth, Yaḥyā ibn Ayyūb, and Ibn Lahiʿah. His ḥadith are sound—except in what he narrates from Qatādah, for in that corpus he relates reports that no one else transmits.
Abū Bakr al-Khaṭīb said: “Among those who narrated from him were Yazīd ibn Abī Ḥabīb and Shaybān ibn Farrūkh; the span between their deaths is 108 years.”
Abū Naṣr al-Kalābādhī relates that Jarīr’s son Wahb said: “Anas died in 90 AH, when I was five years old, and Jarīr died in 170 AH.”
Aḥmad ibn Sinān al-Qaṭṭān narrated from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Mahdī: “Jarīr ibn Ḥāzim’s memory became confused. He had sons who were students of ḥadith; when they noticed this, they secluded him, and no one heard anything from him during his period of confusion.”
Abū Ḥātim al-Rāzī said: “His condition changed one year before he died.”
Abū Salamah al-Tabūdhakī remarked: “I never saw Hammād ibn Salamah revere anyone as much as he revered Jarīr ibn Ḥāzim.”
Aḥmad ibn Isḥāq informed us; al-Fath ibn ʿAbd al-Salām informed us; Hibah Allāh ibn al-Ḥusayn informed us; Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad al-Bazzāz narrated to us; ʿĪsā ibn ʿAlī dictated to us; Abū al-Qāsim ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad narrated to us; Shaybān ibn Farrūkh narrated to us; Jarīr ibn Ḥāzim narrated to us, from ʿAbd al-Malik ibn ʿUmayr, from Jābir ibn Samurah, who said:
“ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with him) addressed us at al-Jābiya (1) and said: ‘The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, stood among us and said: “Treat my Companions well, then…”’”
