Zuhayr ibn Muʿāwiyah reported: Sulaymān al-Taymī told us—Anas related to me—that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Who will go and see what Abu Jahl has done?” Ibn Masʿūd went off and found that the two sons of ʿAfrāʾ had struck him until he was cold in death. He asked, “Are you Abu Jahl?” and took hold of his beard. Abu Jahl replied, “Is there anything higher than for a man to be killed by you—or by his own people?” Recorded by al-Bukhārī and Muslim.
Ismāʿīl ibn Abī Khālid narrated from Qays, from ʿAbdullāh, that he came to Abu Jahl and said, “Allah has disgraced you.” Abu Jahl retorted, “Was there ever a man killed more deliberately than I?” Recorded by al-Bukhārī.
ʿAthām ibn ʿAlī reported: al-Aʿmash related to us, from Abū Isḥāq, from Abū ʿUbaydah, from ʿAbdullāh, who said: I reached Abu Jahl while he was lying on the ground, wearing a helmet and holding a fine sword, whereas I had only a battered one. I began jabbing his head with my blade, recalling the jabs he used to give my head in Mecca. When his hand grew weak, I seized his sword. He lifted his head and asked, “To whom does the rout belong— to us or to you? Were you not our little shepherd in Mecca?” Then I finished him off.
I went to the Prophet ﷺ and said, “I have killed Abu Jahl.” He asked, “By Allah, the One beside whom there is no deity—have you really?” He made me swear three times, then he rose, went with me to them, and invoked a curse upon them.
A similar report is transmitted from Sufyān al-Thawrī, from Abū Isḥāq, which likewise states: “He made me swear an oath.”
