Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

26 – Ashʿab al-Ṭamaʿ ibn Jubayr al-Madani, the son of Umm Ḥamīdah*

He was known as Ibn Umm Ḥamīdah (1), and people cited his greed as a proverb.

He transmitted only a few reports from ʿIkrimah, Sālim, and Abān ibn ʿUthmān.

Those who narrated from him include Maʿdī ibn Sulaymān and Abū ʿĀṣim al-Nabīl. He was a man of banter and freeloading, yet fabrications were also circulated in his name.

Al-Aṣmaʿī said: “Some boys once teased him. They cried, ‘Woe to you! Go—Sālim is handing out dates.’ They ran off, and he ran with them, saying, ‘Perhaps it is true.’”

It is also said that he presented himself to al-Walīd ibn Yazīd.

ʿUthmān ibn Fāyid related: “Ashʿab, the client of ʿUthmān ibn ʿAffān, narrated to us from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Jaʿfar: ‘I saw the Prophet ﷺ wearing his signet ring on his right hand.’” (2) ʿUthmān, however, was judged weak.

Abū ʿĀṣim said: “Ashʿab narrated to us; ʿIkrimah narrated to us from Ibn ʿAbbās, who said, ‘Allah has two blessings upon His servant.’” Ashʿab then fell silent. They said, “Name them!” He replied, “One of them ʿIkrimah has forgotten, and the other is me.”

(1) In the base manuscript the word is vocalized in two ways—first with a damma on the letter ḥa and a fatha on the mim, and second with a fatha on the ḥa and a kasra on the mim; the copyist added the remark “both” to show that either reading is permissible. (2) Also transmitted by al-Tirmidhi in al-Shamaʾil, 1/186, and in al-Jamiʿ, no. 1744; and by al-Nasaʾi, 8/175, through the isnad of Hammad ibn Salama → ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Abi Rafiʿ → ʿAbd Allah ibn Jaʿfar. Although ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Abi Rafiʿ is an unknown narrator, the report is corroborated by a narration from Anas ibn Malik recorded by Abu Shaykh in Akhlaq al-Nabi, pp. 131–132, with a sound chain, so the combined evidence strengthens the hadith.
