Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

Abū Dāwūd said, “Reliable, except that he was an Ibāḍī.” (1)
Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah remarked, “He was truthful.”
Muḥammad ibn Saʿd commented, “He was not of that standing.”
Al-ʿUqaylī listed him in his book and stated: “Aḥmad ibn Zukayr related to us, Aḥmad ibn Saʿīd al-Fihri related to us, Muḥammad ibn ʿUbayd al-Tabbān related to us, who said:
‘My father heard me say, “ʿĪsā ibn Yūnus narrated to us from al-Walīd ibn Kathīr,” whereupon he said, “My son, do you know who al-Walīd ibn Kathīr is? By Allah, he was a Qadarī, a client of the Banū Makhzūm. The people of Iraq come to our land and do not care from whom they take their reports.”’”
Ibn Saʿd further recorded: “He died in 151 AH.”

  1. Ibn Abī Maryam, Abū Bakr ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Ghassānī * (D, T, Q)
The imām, ḥadīth scholar, exemplar, and godly devotee: Abū Bakr ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Maryam.
(1) The Ibadis are a group that acknowledged the imamate of Abd Allah b. Ibad and later splintered into several branches. They hold that the ‘unbelievers of this community’—that is, all Muslims who disagree with them—are free from both shirk and true faith: they are neither believers nor polytheists, yet still classed as unbelievers. Such persons’ testimony is admissible; their blood is inviolable in private but may be shed publicly. Marriage with them and inheritance from them are valid. Nevertheless, the Ibadis describe them as combatants against God and His Messenger who do not follow the true religion. Only part of their property may be taken as lawful booty—specifically horses and weapons—whereas gold and silver must be returned to their owners after seizure. The movement subsequently divided into four sects: the Hafsiyya, the Harithiyya, the Yazidiyya, and a faction termed ‘people of obedience not intended for God.’ (Al-Farq bayna al-firaq, pp. 103-104) Abd Allah b. Ibad al-Muqaisi al-Murri al-Tamimi, from the clan of Murra b. Ubayd b. Muqais, was their leader and eponym. He was contemporary with Muawiya and lived into the late years of Abd al-Malik b. Marwan.
