Ibn Isḥāq’s ḥadīth.
ʿAmr ibn ʿAlī, Ibrāhīm Nafṭawayh, and others said: Ibn Isḥāq died in the year 150 AH.
Al-Haytham ibn ʿAdī, Aḥmad ibn Khālid al-Wahbī, and others said: he died in 151 AH.
ʿAlī ibn al-Madīnī, Yaḥyā ibn Maʿīn, Zakariyyā al-Sājī, and others said: [he died in] 152 AH.
Shabāb said: he passed away in 152 or 153.
Muslim cited him only in corroborative chains ⦗1⦘; Bukhārī used him for support, and the authors of the Sunan also recorded his reports.
Al-Wahbī was the last of Ibn Isḥāq’s pupils; he died in 215 AH.
16 – Ibrāhīm ibn Muḥammad ibn al-Muntashir ibn al-Ajdaʿ al-Hamdānī (ʿ), a Kufan, one of the leading authorities in religion and among the most reliable narrators.
= (Chain of transmission:) ‑ Abd al-Ala → Muhammad ibn Ishaq → Saʿid ibn Abi Saʿid al-Maqburi → ʿAmr ibn Salim al-Zurqi → Abu Qatadah.
All the transmitters are reliable. A shortened version was recorded by Malik in the Muwattaʾ 1/170, by al-Bukhari 1/487-488, and by Muslim (no. 543), through the route of ʿAmir ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn al-Zubayr → ʿAmr ibn Salim → Abu Qatadah al-Sulami.
(1) This means that al-Bukhari never cited a report from him alone; he always paired him with another transmitter. Therefore, it is incorrect to say—whenever Muhammad ibn Ishaq appears in the chain—that “the transmitters are those of the Sahih.”
In hadith terminology, mutabaʿa (corroborative transmission) occurs when a reliable narrator reports a hadith with a chain back to the Prophet, peace be upon him. If no one else transmits that hadith at all, it is classified as gharib (isolated). If another narrator relates the same text through the same shaykh or the shaykh’s shaykh, that second narration is called a mutabaʿa. Such corroboration strengthens a chain that contains a mildly weak narrator—e.g. one with poor memory, prone to tadlis, or narrating mursal reports—so that the hadith becomes acceptable.
