Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

Yaʿqūb al-Fasawī said: ʿAlī remarked, “I have found only two objectionable hadiths in Ibn Isḥāq’s corpus:

  1. Nāfiʿ—from Ibn ʿUmar—from the Prophet ﷺ: ‘When one of you becomes drowsy on Friday (1)…’.

  2. al-Zuhrī—from ʿUrwah—from Zayd ibn Khālid (2): ‘If any of you touches his private part (3)…’.

He cited no authority for either of these; in his other narrations he simply says, ‘So-and-so mentioned…,’ whereas in these he declares, ‘He narrated to us.’

Yaʿqūb al-Fasawī also said: I heard one of the sons of Juwayriyah ibn Asmāʾ—who kept close company with ʿAlī—relate:

‘I heard ʿAlī say, “A number of Ibn Isḥāq’s reports reached me, and I found fault with only four of them. I thought some of what I questioned came from him and some did not.”’

(1) Related by Abu Dawud (no. 1119), Ahmad (2/22, 32), al-Tirmidhi (no. 526) and al-Bayhaqi (3/237), all through the chain of Muhammad ibn Ishaq, from Nafiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar. Ibn Hibban (no. 571) and al-Hakim (1/291) graded it authentic, and al-Dhahabi concurred. Al-Tirmidhi also called it hasan sahih, although it contains the ʿanʿana of Ibn Ishaq, who practised tadlis. Al-Bayhaqi transmits an additional route, and the report is further supported by the hadith of Samura ibn Jundub (3/237–238) and by al-Bazzar as cited in Majmaʿ al-zawaʾid (2/180). Even though the latter chain is weak, the corroborating routes raise the hadith to the rank of hasan. (2) The author states in al-Mizan (3/473): “This is an error; the correct wording is ‘from Busra’ instead of ‘Zayd.’” (3) Reported by Ahmad in his Musnad (5/194) and by al-Tahawi (p. 44) through Muhammad ibn Ishaq, who said: “Muhammad ibn Muslim al-Zuhri narrated to me, from ʿUrwa ibn al-Zubayr, from Zayd ibn Khalid al-Juhani: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, ‘Whoever touches his private part should perform wudu.’” Although this isnad has been criticised, it is supported within the same topic by the narration of Busra bint Safwan, recorded by Malik (1/142), al-Shafiʿi in al-Umm (1/15), Ahmad (6/406), Abu Dawud (no. 181), al-Nasaʾi (1/100) and Ibn Majah (no. 479): “If any of you touches his penis, let him perform wudu.” This report is authentic and has been declared sahih by several leading hadith scholars, yet the obligation is understood as recommended rather than mandatory because another text diverts it from binding status—the hadith of Talq ibn ʿAli, in which the Prophet ﷺ was asked about a man touching his penis and replied, “It is only a piece of your own flesh.” Recorded by Ahmad (4/22–23), Abu Dawud (no. 182), al-Tirmidhi (no. 85), al-Nasaʾi (1/38) and Ibn Majah (no. 483); its chain is sahih, and Ibn Hibban (no. 207) and other hadith critics authenticated it.
